Queen Anne's to seek $300,000 for mortgage program

Queen Anne's County will seek $300,000 for a mortgage program that helps police officers, volunteer firefighters and teachers buy a home.

The Queen Anne's County Commissioners voted May 6 seek $300,000 in community development block grant funds for the county's critical workforce mortgage program. The federal funds are allocated here by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development.

The critical workforce mortgage program has provided $1.5 million to help 32 families buy homes in Queen Anne's County in the last five years, said Mickey Lomax, housing administrator with the the county Department of Housing and Community Services.

The county mortgage program provides no-interest loans up to $50,000 for teachers and public safety employees, deemed critical to the county workforce. Volunteer firefighters and emergency medical technicians; county sheriff's deputies; county correctional officers; and Centreville Police officers can qualify for the program if they meet federal income guidelines.
