Morony is named QA Republican of the Year
Former Lt. Gov. Steele is keynote speaker at Reagan Day Dinner
Andi Morony of Centreville was named the 2007 Republican of the Year for Queen Anne's County on Saturday during the annual Queen Anne's County Republican Party Reagan Day Dinner, held at Prospect Bay County Club in Grasonville.
Morony, a former elementary school teacher with Queen Anne's County Public School's, has served as president of the county's Republican Club since January, 2007. She also was served as vice president of Chesapeake Republican Women, and is the corresponding secretary of the Maryland Federation of Republican Women.
A native Marylander, and formerly of Crofton, she and her husband, John, moved to Queen Anne's County seven years ago. The Moronys have three children, sons Anthony, 18, and Edward, 14, and daughter Lilianne, 6, and currently are host parents to a 17-year-old foreign exchange student from South Korea.
Morony was honored to receive the prestigious award from the Republican Central Committee. A lifelong Republican, she said, "I'd like to get more people involved in politics. People can make a difference. Doing as little as writing letters to the editor, and phone calls to representative's offices on issues that concern you. It makes a difference."
Former Maryland Lt. Governor Michael Steele and QAC Central Committee member Diana Waterman presented the award to Morony. Steele was the keynote speaker. He made a special point of talking about what Morony hopes to do with getting more people involved, saying, "We need to bring someone new to every function we sponsor. By doing that we'll breakdown old stereotypes about the Republican Party. Stereotypes we know are lies."
Steele also gave words of support, not only for Republican Presidential nominee Sen. John McCain, but also to candidate Andy Harris, who is the Republican candidate for the 1st District seat to the House of Representatives. Harris is opposing Democrat Frank Kratovil, Jr., currently Queen Anne's County state's attorney.
"This election is not just about electing a president. We need to be about reconnecting with the people of the community and state. I'd like to see us elect another Republican governor. I hope you to see you eventually elect a Republican state's attorney."
Following Steele's comments, Harris spoke, mostly criticizing Kratovil as following the Democratic tradition of "raising taxes to solve problems."
